Brian Slack washired as the head coach of the Bellarmine University women’s tennis team prior to the 2021-22 season.
Slack will enter his third season at the helm in 2023-24.
During the 2021-22 season, Slack guided Bellarmine to itsfirst team win in the Division I era. EkaterinaTikhonkoposted 10 singles victories and was named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. The Knights then had a three-win improvement in 2022-23, which included their first-ever ASUN win, a 4-1 triumph over Queens.
Slack comes to Bellarmine after a distinguished career at the NAIA and junior college levels where he was the coach of nine juco national champions (eight as a head coach, one as an assistant) along with NAIA national finalists as an assistant on both the women’s and men’s sides.
Slack spent the two seasons prior to his arrival at Bellarmine as the women’s and men’s assistant tennis coach at Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Florida. He helped guide both teams to becoming the NAIA National Championship runners-up last season as the men went 18-2 overall and the women 15-2 while both were the Sun Conference Tournament champions and went 6-0 in league play. Both carried a No. 2 national ranking.
From 2015-20, Slack was the women’s and men’s head coach at ASA College Miami in Hialeah, Florida. He led the women and men to two junior college national titles apiece, with the women capturing the top prize in 2016 and 2019 and the men in 2016 and 2017. Slack also guided the women to a national runner-up finish in 2017 and the men in 2018 and 2019. He amassed a 76-9 record on the women’s side and a 40-7 record on the men’s side in his tenure at ASA College Miami.
In addition, Slack was named ITA/Wilson Women’s National Coach of the Year in 2016. He was selected as the women’s Coach of the Tournament at the NJCAA National Championships in 2016 and 2019 and earned the men’s Max Grubbs Coach of the Tournament honor in 2016 and 2017.
Slack was the women’s and men’s head coach at ASA College Brooklyn in New York from 2012-15. He led both the women and men to junior college national titles in 2014 and 2015 after both were runners-up in 2013. Slack swept Coach of the Tournament honors for the women and men at the NJCAA National Championships in 2014 and 2015. He was named ITA/Wilson Men’s National Coach of the Year in 2015, and the preceding year was chosen as the women’s Region IV Coach of the Year. He posted a 32-11 record in women’s action and 44-7 mark in men’s action at ASA College Brooklyn.
Prior to his stint in New York, Slack was the men’s assistant coach at Vincennes University in Indiana from 2006-12. He helped guide the squad to five top 7 finishes at the NJCAA National Championships, with the Trailblazers hoisting the national championship trophy in 2011. Slack was recognized as the ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010. Vincennes went 127-18 during his tenure.
Slack began his coaching career by spending a year as the associate head women’s and men’s tennis coach at Morehead State University in Kentucky.
Slack played college tennis for one season at Vincennes (2000-01) before finishing his playing career at IUPUI (2001-04). He remains tied for second in career singles wins at IUPUI (45) and is second in singles winning percentage (.643). Slack was named Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year in 2002 and was a three-time Mid-Con All-Conference selection.
Slack played high school tennis at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis. He finished as the state runner-up in doubles in 1997 while sporting a 96-12 career record.
Slack earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from IUPUI in 2004. He is married to Meaghan Raynes-Slack and they have two daughters, Braelynn and Mykah.
