Is landscape architecture?

2011 •

David Leatherbarrow

I was not the first to pose this question; it was first asked in print by Garrett Eckbo, one of the most important landscape architects in America in the twentieth century. One could equally reverse the question and ask: ‘Is architecture landscape?’. In either formulation the question is about the relationship between two arts that are normally understood as separate professions these days. In fact, Eckbo was not the first to puzzle over this issue, even if his exact formulation had no antecedents. The question had already been posed in the nineteenth century, when landscape architecture emerged as a distinct discipline. The early theorists of the field, Humphry Repton and John Claudius Loudon in England, Antoine-Chrysostome Quatremère de Quincy in France, and Andrew Jackson Downing in the USA, all wondered about the relationships between these two practices – if indeed they were two. The professional accrediting and licensing bodies that were formed subsequently tried to settle the...

PLANNING, DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

2021 •

Mahmood I . Albrifkany

Landscape Architecture is a professional discipline that creates spaces by creating a harmonious intersection with natural, cultural and social factors in line with ecological, functional, aesthetic and economic goals. It aims to guide the effects and interactions between landscape and human in the right way within the balance of protection / use by keeping sustainability at the forefront in the protection of natural resources. Landscape architecture should not be considered as an art only with aesthetic concerns or as a science with only functional purposes. From this point of view, it is inevitable for landscape architects to use different working methods in achieving the goals and objectives required by the profession and to consider the profession from different angles. Landscape architecture is an art and science branch with different approaches such as planning, design, management and engineering. This book contains invaluable studies containing information about the planning, design and management aspects of landscape architecture. I would like to thank the authors who contributed to this study with their chapter articles and made us use of their valuable ideas and research. I would also like to thank Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seyithan SEYDOŞOĞLU and IKSAD Publishing staff for their support and knowledge during the formation and publication stages of the book. I hope the book will be useful for the scientific world and anyone interested in landscape architecture.

Characteristics of modern landscape architecture and its education

2014 •

Davorin Gazvoda

Landscape architecture must keep the advantage it has gained because of its wide use of the knowledge of landscape which no other related disciplines have. Detailed landscape design, creation of new spaces—new landscapes, and use of characteristic, alive landscape material as well as nature protection, landscape ecology and regional landscape planning require both a creative and a scientific approach. The essential ability that landscape architects have, i.e. the capability of switching between concrete details and even global landscape interactions—enables them to achieve different and often better results than might be developed by architects, artists, urban planners, biologists, ecologists and other colleagues when dealing with similar landscape problems. Examples of our work, deriving from “the layer-cake method ” and applied to recent studio projects, are used to illustrate key statements in the paper. A link to the teaching process is made in order to offer small but important...

Landscape as a Response to Architecture

2016 •

IAEME Publication

The paper tries to investigate the processes through which landscape Design Thinking evolves through the medium of few case studies/studio exercises. These are our experiments to help discuss the long standing creative engagement & the most aspired Integration of Architecture & Landscape. The understanding of these processes is with an objective that will help critically appraise & justify landscape design beyond face value appreciation. Thus it will help establish the validity of a given or created Environment in response to the built. As a discipline, conventionally landscape has always been thought as an interdependent on Architecture. The paper also tries to outreach this aspect where in landscape distills itself from architecture & attempts to gain identity for itself.

Daniel Jauslin

49th IFLA World Congress Cape Town South Africa 2012 Landscapes in Transition Abstract: Landscape has been used as a metaphor or conceptual reference for an increasing amount of excellent architectural projects in the last two decades. The phenomenon seems to be a substantial innovation of architecture with an interesting potential for artistic, social and ecological gains. To be able to better understand and critically review these projects, it is important to better understand the notion of landscape.

Landscape and architecture. A new design paradigm

2012 •

Francesco Ascenzi

Within the complex scenario of architectural research in recent decades, this study identifies and investigates the common thread that links, transversally compared to different linguistic styles, the theories and proposals around an idea of landscape as a theoretical paradigm through which design experimentation has opened up to new configurations that more effectively reflect the changeable, dynamic and contradictory reality of our era. Seen in this way, the landscape, with its intrinsically interdisciplinary nature, is treated as a research tool and a model of thought which is used insofar, compared to other consolidated models, as it manages more efficiently to represent and synthesize the ever more multiform and articulated nature of the project. By means of this new alliance, architecture has seen the creation of new research paths, new possibilities of expression, new formal categories and new contextual relations that have determined profound changes starting from its fundam...
