Homemade Masala Chai Recipe
Tea has become one of my daily habits. I now understand why the British turn to tea every afternoon; it’s soothing, uplifting, and truly pleasurable.
I’ve been enjoying quite a few different tea blends this year, from four different varieties of green tea all the way to my leftover holiday rooibos (red) tea. Each tea has its own wholesome benefits, but one favorite has emerged, and it’s definitely masala chai. Masala means “spiced” and chai means “tea,” so put them together and you have “spiced tea.”
Some people get worked up when you call it “chai tea,” because that’s like saying “tea tea,” but I can’t get too worked up over that. I’m too relaxed from drinking tea, because that’s one of my health goals for the year: to destress by enjoying tea on a daily basis.

Tips For Making Masala Chai at Home
- There are as many formulas for masala chai as there are stars in the sky. From fennel to star anise, the list of herbs and spices is endless. The best recipe is yourmasala chai recipe. Throw in what youlike!
- I use whole milk because that’s what I always have in the fridge, but feel free to use 2%, 1%, or skim if you prefer. Any one will work equally well.
- For an authentic tea, you’ll want to hunt down some Assam tea, but if you can’t find it, regular black tea will work. Better to have chai made with regular black tea than no chai at all!

Ingredients
- 2cupswater
- 8green cardamom podscracked open
- 1cinnamon stick
- 4black peppercorns
- 2slicesfresh ginger
- 2piecesstar anisetwo whole star shapes
- 2teabagsblack teaor two servings of loose black tea
- Milkto taste
- Sweetenersuch as Truvia Spoonable, to taste
Instructions
Bring the water to a boil in a pot. Add the spices and the ginger and remove from heat. Let steep with the lid on for 10 minutes.
Bring the mixture to a boil again and add the tea. Remove from heat, put the lid on, and steep for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea.
Add about two tablespoons or so of milk to each of two mugs. Strain the tea and pour it equally between the two mugs. Add sweetener to taste and serve hot.

I love tea to start my day out or just to take a couple minutes to my self in in the afternoon! This sounds like a delicious tea recipe to make up. Love the idea of using Truvia in place of sugar.

I keep trying chai tea but haven’t found one I like yet. This one might be it. Have to add this to my recipe watch list. Maybe I’ve never found the right combination for me.

You can experiment, too. Add more of what you like, less of what you don’t- then you’ll have a personal combination to enjoy.

Chai teas are soooo good when you add milk to them…I love them creamy. Truvia is also my favorite granulated sweetener. I carry it around me wherever I go, and need to try out the spoonable one.
