OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: The Cathedral Hill district is home to many architecturally significant buildings, including the nationally renown Cathedral of Saint Paul which sits majestically on a hill, just two blocks from the inn, overlooking downtown Saint Paul. This Cathedral is considered the third largest completed church in the U.S. Also within walking distance is the Minnesota State Capital, and a wonderful blend of great eateries, shopping, historic architecture and modern luxuries.

Summit Avenue
The Historic Hill Heritage Preservation District is home to the largest collection of fine 19th-century architecture in the state. The American Planning Association named Summit Avenue, in the heart of the district, a “Great Street” in 2008. Beginning at the James J. Hill House and continuing westward for 4.5-miles, it “stands alone as the country’s best preserved avenue” from the Victorian Era. Many guided and self-guided tours are available and can be found online.
James J. Hill House
Completed in 1891, this massive stone Richardsonian Romanesque mansion was
designed for the builder of the Great Northern Railway. The James J. Hill House is
a National Historic Landmark.
Cathedral of Saint Paul
The Cathedral of Saint Paul, whose magnificent dome rises two blocks from the B&B,
and is the seat of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The Cathedral is a fine
example of Beaux Arts architecture and was placed on the National Register of Historic
Buildings in 1974.
Minnesota State Capitol
Designed by Cass Gilbert, the Minnesota State Capitol features the world’s second-largest self-supporting marble dome in the world and was modeled after Michelangelo’s Dome of St. Peter’s in Rome.

Fitzgerald Theatre
Home of the Prairie Home Companion live radio show with Lake Wobegone “native,” Garrison Keillor, the Fitzgerald Theater is located in downtown St. Paul on Exchange Street between Wabasha and Cedar Streets. Parking is available in the 7th Street Ramp —entrances to this ramp are located on both Cedar and Wabasha. Parking is also available in the Gallery Ramp on Exchange Street between St. Peter and Wabasha Streets. Ample on-street parking is also available within a one to two block area.
The Ordway
Recognized as one of the U.S.’s leading not-for-profit performing arts centers, the Ordway is home to a wide variety of performances throughout the year that encompass the finest in American musical theater, world music, dance, and vocal artists on its Music Theater stage.

Minnesota Museum of American Art
“The Minnesota Museum of American Art (MMAA) was founded as the St. Paul School of Fine Arts in 1894, and formally incorporated in 1927, when it began collecting works of art for instructional purposes.. . . The bulk of the MMAA collections have been assembled since the late 1940s. . . . Renamed the Minnesota Museum of Art in 1969, it became a leading presence on the Twin Cities art scene through its educational programs and nationally-regarded exhibitions. In 1992, the museum added ‘American’ to its name to reflect its increasing focus on national and regional art and the changing nature of the American experience as seen through the visual arts.”
Minnesota History Center
The interactive museum offers both permanent and changing exhibits and features special events throughout the year.
It is home to the Minnesota Historical Society’s collectionsand provides a place for visitors to discover their connections to the past. This landmark building houses a museum, library, classrooms, and conference rooms, the 314-seat 3M Auditorium, two museum stores and the renowned Café Minnesota.
