Pre-Licensure BSN

Already have a bachelor’s degree? Are you interested in nursing? We now offer an Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN option (ABSN) that acknowledges your previous success as you transition to an accredited nursing program.

You have been here before and so have your peers. Together with the support of our experienced faculty, we know you can complete your nursing program at a rapid pace. Saving you time and money while ensuring you are well-prepared to transition into the rewarding profession of nursing.

As an ABSN student on our Albuquerque campus (HSC-ABQ), you will be integrated into the main UNM and Health Science campuses, with all the resources of New Mexico’s flagship and only R-1 research institution at your fingertips. Including astate-of-the-art simulation and skills labssteps away from the College of Nursing building.

Unique Clinical Experiences

Your clinical experiences will be diverse. You will receive the necessary experiences to ensure you are ready for your career as a BSN-prepared nurse.

Our students have the opportunity to participate in international clinical experiences in the Navajo Nation, the 19 New Mexico Pueblos, and the Apache Nation and Mescalero Tribe, among others.

Partnership for success

We have a strong partnership with UNM Health System that allows our students to participate in clinical experiences in the state's only Level 1 trauma center. Each year, about99% of our Pre-Licensure BSN Albuquerque campus students participate in clinical experiences within the UNM Health System, including Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho.

Our BSN students also participate in clinical placements with our other clinical partners: New Mexico VA Health Care System,Lovelace Health System, Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Albuquerque Public Schools and New Mexico Department of Health, among many others.

Practice In a Safe Environment

At UNM you will practice and test your skills you learn in the classroom in our state-of-the-art simulation center and skills lab. Simulation provides you with the hands-on learning you require in a low-risk environment. All simulation experiences follow strict COVID-safe guidelines to make sure you’re practicing in a safe way; the right way.

We have all the equipment!

Ourhigh-fidelity manikins are fully interactive and mimic a real person. They canhave conversations with you, blink and track their eyes, and even bleed.

Students also benefit from ourlow-fidelitymanikins used for learning basic skills. We practice IVs, catheters, feeding tubes, wound care, positioning and much more.

Our simulation center is dedicated to learners and includes 24 clinic spaces, 7 debriefing rooms, 3 acute care rooms, 5 skills rooms with 6-8 beds each, and a community student waiting area/lounge.

Minimum Requirements to Apply

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Successful completion of prerequisite courses
  • No HESI Exam is required!
